I think the reason this article is needed is that the rules of the marketplace of ideas are being challenged: while the government may not retaliate against your speech in general, the mob may entice your employer to. I think opinions that are hateful deserve the mob that shows up to attack them. Opinions merely interpreted as hateful, which don’t expressly intend to be so, that then spawn a mob demanding the cancellation of their livelihood has a chilling effect on free speech.
